Work your way through graduate school and earn real-life industry experience!!

Watson Institute for Systems Excellence, or WISE, is a part of the Department of Systems Science and Industrial Engineering at the Thomas J. Watson School of Engineering and Applied Science at Binghamton University, Binghamton, NY.

WISE brings graduate students together with federal and industry sponsors to conduct innovative research. Gradudate students at the Master's degree and PhD levels not only attend graduate school, but also work in an exciting industry-based research, earning them real-life experience, making invaluable contacts, collaborating closely with distinguished faculty and performing cutting-edge research.

Our track record has been extra-ordinary. Some of the facts and figures are as follows:

  • $2 million — approximate annual external funding from WISE sponsors
  • Just under 24 — the number of industry sponsors that work with the Institute
  • 54 — the number of students in WISE (20 are doctoral candidates)
  • 1:15 — department faculty-to-student ratio
  • 1990 — the year the Electronics Manufacturing Research and Services (EMRS) research group, the precursor to WISE, was established at Binghamton
  • 2007 — the year EMRS was renamed the Watson Institute for Systems Excellence to better reflect the group’s work and make it easier to expand into other fields
